Ottawa is home to a large and active heritage community.  Organizations pursue a wide range of heritage objectives through their work with museums, archives, heritage buildings, cultural landscapes, local history, ethnic and cultural activities, archaeology, genealogy, cemeteries and collections.  Connect with your local heritage organizations to learn more about the rich history of the Ottawa area.

Council of Heritage Organizations in Ottawa (CHOO | COPO)

The Council of Heritage Organizations in Ottawa is the sole umbrella organization providing active and effective networking for the entire heritage community in Ottawa. On behalf of our members and for the good of all Ottawa citizens, we work to promote responsible municipal stewardship and to preserve and celebrate local heritage resources. Our activities include: advocacy, outreach, program delivery, member services, and partnerships with the city government, other levels of government, like-minded community-based associations, and the private sector.

Applied Museum Studies Program, Algonquin College

This three-year Ontario College Advanced Diploma program provides students with a sound background in museum work and the technical areas common to all museums including collections management, exhibit preparation, conservation, educational programming, and museum management.


Archéo-Québec

In 1999, about thirty individuals and groups came together to found Réseau Archéo-Québec, motivated by a desire to communicate their love of Quebec archaeology to as wide a public as possible. Today, this not-for-profit association has some one hundred members, dedicated to studying, protecting and developing Quebec’s archaeological heritage.

The Archéo-Québec network’s mission is to encourage people to get to know and love Quebec archaeology. Adopt our slogan – “Put a bit of archaeology in your life!”!

Arnprior and District Museum

Arnprior and its surrounding area were first settled by First Nation’s People along the shore of the Ottawa. At the end of the 18th century European settlers from Scotland, England and Ireland along with veterans of the War of 1812 began to deforest and subsequently farm and log the area.

Association of Friends of Billings Estate Museum

Mandate and Activities:

  1. To provide financial and material support to the maintenance of the Museum and its programs.
  2. To enhance the educational, cultural and preservation endeavors of the Museum's staff

Beechwood Cemetery Foundation

Established in the year 2000, governed by an active and distinguished volunteer Board of Directors, and supported by a committed and enthusiastic group of Friends of The Beechwood Cemetery Foundation, The Beechwood Cemetery Foundation is a registered Canadian charity that owns and operates Beechwood Cemetery – the National Cemetery of Canada.

Billings Estate National Historic Site

Just 10 minutes from downtown Ottawa exists a hidden treasure that holds the key to much of Ottawa’s local history. Who built Billings Bridge? Who profited from the Rideau Canal? What was life like in 19th century Ottawa? Billings Estate has these answers and more. Come by car, bike or bus to spend the day exploring, experiencing and connecting with more than 150 years of history. New exhibits, creative programs, and customized tours are all designed to tell the story of one of Ottawa’s founding families – appealing to both the young and the young at heart.

Black History Ottawa

Black History Ottawa is a registered non-profit Canadian charitable organisation led by a dedicated group of volunteers. Since 1986, it has coordinated and promoted Black History Month in Ottawa to celebrate the contribution of Black people to the Canadian mosaic. In addition, the organisation supports aspiring local artists, designers, writers and innovators. It also organises child and youth-centred mentorship and leadership programs during the year.
